A little note on wedding gift etiquette:

* Obviously you can't give more than you can afford, but you should try to give as much to the new couple as they are spending on you to have them at your wedding. Yes, you should factor in your guest when you are calculating this equation.
* You should also do your best to give your gift within a month of the event. Technically, you do have a year, but if you are a procrastinator, you may forget and then you will just end up feeling guilty.
* If you are a friend of the bride and groom, you may end up at the batchelor(ette) parties, and bridal showers and you should bring a gift or be prepared to spend money at each event.
* If you don't have a lot of money, don't worry, spend what you can and be sure to attach a meaningful card. Your friend should consider your presence as a wonderful gift.

Give the gift of experience. One of the most wonderful gifts you can give is an event or a weekend away that encourages the happy couple to get away and focus on each other.

Planning a wedding *should* be something that brings a couple closer together, but the stress and angst often created by planning the party of your lifetime can really put a damper on the romance.

Give them a night away from it all to a romantic location - perhaps somewhere they have never, or would never go otherwise. Try to surprise them with a gift certificate for dinner when they arrive. Yes, they will throw on the token cheap wedding gift, but you don't want to be cheap! Knives are one of the items about which couples are getting more and more selective.

A high end knife set can last a lifetime, after all, only needing sharpening and basic maintenance. High end knives can be purchased in a set or individually, which can make them a great gift for the registry.

If you want to give something that can truly last a lifetime for your bride and groom, go with the knife set. Not to mention the joke you can insert in their wedding card about not using them on each other...

Wedding gift giving can be a pain, especially if you don't like the registry - or if the couple won't put one together. It could be a second marriage, or a late in life marriage - so how do you pick something out?

Aside from the typical kitchenware like the ever popular kitchen aid mixer, or all clad pot and pan set, you can get a bit more creative. Do they like to entertain? Why not consider some wine accessories and perhaps a wine of the month club? Maybe even a case of a reasonably priced champagne.
